CHARTER SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT
What is a charter school?
A charter school is a new form of public school that may be started and
operated by individuals or organizations from outside of the traditional
school district system. Successful charter school developers are granted
a charter to operate a public school for a fixed period of time. Charter
schools are generally exempt from most laws that apply to regular public
schools, so administrators, faculty, staff and parents have considerable
autonomy in designing an educational program, facilities and budget that
meet the needs of their students.
How can IEG help in developing your Charter School?
Starting a charter school requires a considerable
amount of planning time
prior to opening the school doors. Successful charter school developers
spend one to two years planning the school's educational program, facilities,
finance, governance and operations, personnel, and other issues. The Intercultural
Education Group (IEG) offers several resources for charter school developers.
Intercultural Education Group (IEG) endeavors to provide the support future
and current charter schools need to be successful. IEG will answer charter
school questions, train those that work with charter schools, or more actively
support clients through consulting services.
Charter School Application
IEG will assist in preparing standard charter application in
accordance
with sponsor’s requirements. This service is not limited to Florida, but
available to interested persons from other states.
An agreement to assist
with the preparation and start work must take place 6 months before application
is due to the district.
Charter School Management
About 10% to 12% of charter schools use educational management / consulting
groups as Intercultural Education Group (IEG). States have authorized charter
schools and given a role to charter school management / consulting groups
because they want to improve education. These groups are governed by their
contracts and by state laws and regulations. The founders of such groups
are often former superintendents, school board staff, principals, and teachers
who are invested in high student performance and have the experience to
facilitate school success.
The services offered by Intercultural Education Group (IEG) include but
are not limited to:
- obtaining financing for a facility and assisting in the coordination
of its construction or renovation;

- recruiting, hiring, and training the instructional staff
- providing ongoing professional development
- marketing the school
- coordinating student enrollment
- implementing a curriculum
- formally assessing its success
- sourcing furniture, fixtures, equipment, and technology services
- providing financial management services
- acting as a liaison between the governing board of the school and the
chartering authority in matters of charter compliance, amendment, and
renewal
- overseeing the day-to-day operation of the school
- writing grant proposals on behalf of the school.
As schools of choice continue to develop, educational management/consulting
services may begin to play a stronger role in public education.
